I refer to a media report in
The West Australian
on 16 August, 2012 which states that in the year to September last year, there were 36 suicides – 182 times higher than the general population and almost three times higher than the rate that prompted the 2008 coronial inquest in the Fitzroy Valley, and I ask —
(1) Has the Minister called for a full investigation into these 36 suicides, and if not, why not?
(2) Will the Minister call for an inquiry into these deaths, and if not, why not?

It should be noted that the total number of all cases in the Kimberley (which comprises the Broome and Kununurra Coronial Districts) reported to the Coroner's Office where a death has been reported as a suspected suicide or where a coroner has made a final determination of a finding of suicide, for the whole year of 2011, was 21.
There were no "open cases" where a final determination by a coroner had not been made.
Investigations of alleged suicides are the responsibility of the State Coroner.
