QuestionView source ↗
(1) Why has the Minister refused to make himself available to meet with members of the local Hedland community who are concerned about the impact of his policies on land release, land cost and housing costs in Hedland?
(2) Why has the Minister’s schedule allowed him to come in and out of Hedland largely for media and ceremonial events with no opportunity to meet with people who are being hurt by the Minister’s failure to focus on delivering policies and programs that will tackle the issue of high housing costs in Hedland?

1) I refer the Member to my response to Question 4099 and again reiterate that I have had many meetings with Hedland's civic, community and indigenous leaders as well as land developers on the important issue of land and housing availability and I remain willing to meet as required. The views expressed by Hedland people at my meetings have, to a large extent, framed that actions being taken by the Liberal National Government under the Pilbara Cities initiative to correct the years of neglect suffered by the Pilbara region. Pilbara Cities, funded through Royalties for Regions is already having a significant positive impact on infrastructure and services for Pilbara communities and the Member would be aware of this.
2) I note the Member's acknowledgment of the many occasions that I have visited Hedland to officiate at Royalties for Regions projects that are providing local jobs and an improved lifestyle for the Hedland community. I was also pleased that the Member was able to join me recently for the announcements of Stage 2 of the Land Release in South Hedland and the relocation of the Port Hedland Waste Water Treatment Plant which will free up land allowing for the development of 2500 lots. As the Member knows these two projects will significantly contribute to alleviating land and housing shortages in Hedland and have been welcomed by the Hedland community leaders. I am pleased to advise the Member that there will be further exciting announcements in store for the people of Hedland, thanks to Pilbara Cities and Royalties for Regions.
