WESTERN POWER — TOODYAY FIRES
966. Hon SUE ELLERY to the Minister for Energy:
I refer to earlier evidence by
Western Power to the Community Development and Justice Standing Committee
denying that its infrastructure was the cause of the 2009 Toodyay fires and the
contradictory evidence before that committee yesterday that Western Power's
evidence was misleading and not borne out by objective facts and several expert
reports.
(1) In light
of this, will the minister give Western Power a direction that it accepts full
responsibility for the 2009 fires?
(2) If not, why is the minister urging settlement
discussions?
(3) If yes, why is Western Power's offer to victims
significantly discounted?
(4) In light
of delays in assessment of loss by RiskCover, will the minister agree to reopen
access to the fund established for victims, which closed in March 2011?

I thank the honourable member for
some notice of this question.
(1) No.
(2) Settlement is a matter between Western Power and the
claimants.
(3) The terms
of the agreement remain confidential and may also be subject to legal
professional privilege.
(4) No. The subject fire financial assistance
scheme was widely publicised, and only one claim was submitted after the 31
March 2011 closing date for the scheme.
