❓ A parliamentary question regarding the allocation of Tourism WA funding between event tourism and convention/incentive travel, questioning the rationale behind the investment levels and rates of return. The Minister's response defends the event tourism investment, citing broader benefits beyond direct expenditure and refutes the questioner's figures on convention funding.

(1) What was the total direct expenditure generated for all events held in 2005/06, excluding media impact, as a ratio of Tourism WA spent?
(2) Why is the Minister willing to invest $17 million in event tourism that generates a return of $2.84 for every taxpayer dollar spent but will only spend $1 million on convention and incentive travel that returns $67 for every taxpayer dollar spent?
(3) Why is Tourism WA not investing more in the convention market segment when it has an order of magnitude and larger rate of return than the events market segment?

The fact that the Member for Carine asks to be provided with the direct expenditure and specifically asks that "media impact" is not provided clearly demonstrates a lack of understanding of the overall impact events have on the economy and tourism in particular. I will spell out again information that has already been given to the opposition in response to questions number 1178, 1287 and 1545 - Events are funded for a range of reasons. One very important criterion is the economic return of an event; additionally things taken into account include the media impact, the event frequency, the level of private sector investment, the timing of the event, the risk and the prestige of an event. Tourism Western Australia also takes into account how the event fits into the image and tourism brand of Western Australia that we are trying to portray to our target markets. An example is the Red Bull Air Race. In addition to bringing in $6.2m in economic impact, an event like Red Bull Air Race and Festival will deliver international media coverage to a potential audience of 100 million viewers to our target markets around the world. It will globally position Perth as a vibrant place to live, work and invest. The Member should stop trying to compare events and conventions as they are both very important but very different components of the overall tourism pie. (2) The Member for Carine is incorrect in her assertion that "...only spend $1 million on convention and incentive travel...". As I advised you in question 1220 on 1 August 2006, "Since winning Government we have taken total funding for PCB to around $1.44m per annum - an increase of 42% on Coalition funding." (3) Refer to answer to question 1.
