I refer to the imminent return of convicted sex offender Otto Darcy-Searle, who was freed from prison on the condition that he live in New South Wales. The New South Wales Minister for Justice, Tony Kelly, has said that the government has not signed off on the arrangement, and that that is the reason he can go back. (1) What consultation occurred with the New South Wales government prior to the dumping of this sex offender on the New South Wales community? (2) Has the Minister for Justice in New South Wales misled the community with these comments? (3) Will the Premier give a firm commitment and assurance that Darcy-Searle will be recommitted to prison immediately on his return, and that he will not be released into the community? Dr G.I. GALLOP

(1)-(3) As I am advised, there was consultation between the Parole Board of Western Australia and the New South Wales authority about Darcy-Searle’s movement to the New South Wales town. Mr R.F. Johnson : With whom? From whom? Dr G.I. GALLOP : I am advised that there was consultation between the Parole Board of Western Australia and the relevant authorities in New South Wales on that issue. Secondly, if the New South Wales government withdraws from the commitments it gave on supervision, I would expect the Parole Board of Western Australia to make a decision based upon community safety and the best interests of the people of Western Australia when it has to respond to that withdrawal of support from New South Wales.
