Workforce Development:
I refer to the recent short-sighted
decision by the minister's predecessor to axe the highly successful
First Click and Second Click programs. What alternative training programs is
the minister developing for target groups such as those in the regions, disabled
persons, those on low incomes, women returning to the workforce and seniors?

There is very good news in this
space. I am pleased to announce that in the last 12 months there has been a
significant improvement in the number of people in training and apprenticeships
in Western Australia; in fact, there are 45 000 in Western Australia.

M.J. COWPER : The particular point of interest is that opposition members go
on about the government not providing opportunities for young people in this
space. Of the 112 projects that the government has funded —

SPEAKER : You asked the question, member for Girrawheen, and I am
hearing an answer. I do not know that it is the answer you necessarily want,
but I am hearing an answer.

M.J. COWPER : The good news is that in the past 12 months the government has
provided 112 projects involving 537 apprentices and trainees. Plenty has been
done in this space in relation to that. As I mentioned before, an additional 5 000
apprentices and trainees are in the workforce this year. That increase brings
numbers up to about 45 000. The state government is committed to training young
people in particular in this state. The number of people in training at the
moment is at record numbers in Western Australia.
