SOUTHERN INLAND HEALTH INITIATIVE
622. Mr T.K. WALDRON to the
Minister for Health:
I refer to the excellent work being done on upgrading our
country hospitals and our nursing posts, and I saw that at Tambellup yesterday.
This work is being done under the Liberal–National government's
Southern Inland Health Initiative. How is work on these excellent upgrades
progressing?

I thank the member for Wagin for his
excellent question; well done. We are pleased to announce today that the first
two in a whole series of 26 upgrades to country hospitals as part of the SIHI
package is completed. The Tambellup and Kojonup hospital nursing posts have
been upgraded; that has been concluded. There is a whole range of different
services that have been provided as part of that, including expanded treatment
rooms, multipurpose consulting rooms, allied health rooms, waiting areas,
meeting rooms, ICT, and enclosured zones. That is a magnificent upgrade to
those facilities. This is part of the Southern Inland Health Initiative, which
is half a billion dollars spent on improving health services throughout the
southern inland health region—particularly things like growing the
number of general practitioners to make sure that we get GPs out to towns, some
of which have never had a GP before, and getting out things like telehealth,
which significantly improves the standard of healthcare in those regions. An
amount of $300 million of that total $500 million package is for upgrading the
infrastructure in those hospitals. As I said to members earlier, 26 in total
are being undertaken, and as we move forward over the months and years to come,
we will see increasing numbers of those new health facilities rolled out across
the state. When we add that to the $8 billion worth of health infrastructure
that we have built, with new hospitals in just about every part of the state,
and then add to that upgrades of all the older hospitals in that southern
inland health area, it is a magnificent reform that this government has
achieved in health management in this state.
