Education—Social media ban
563. Mr Liam Staltari to
the Minister for Education:
I refer to the
Commonwealth's under-16 social media ban, which will commence on 10 December. Given
that schools, by their nature, will be on the frontline once the ban takes
effect, what steps has the minister taken, beyond simply using the eSafety
Commissioner's website, to ensure that support is in place for our teachers and
school communities to manage this change?

I thank the member
for the question. It is a really important topic and it provides me with the
opportunity to acknowledge and thank the federal government for taking such
extraordinarily strong action to protect young people against what we know are the
significant and negative impacts of social media.
It was a landmark
decision by the federal government; let me be absolutely clear about that. Certainly,
this side of the house, this government, welcomes that approach. It was my
great privilege to be in Brisbane on Friday as part of the Education Ministers Meeting,
where we got an important update from the federal Minister for Communications
and the eSafety Commissioner on the rollout of this significant reform. I also
acknowledge, and so do the Department of Education and schools, that this
reform will be successful because of schools playing their part in supporting
students and families in the rollout of this important initiative. I can happily
say to the member that I am regularly briefed by the Department of Education,
which has a comprehensive plan of support and communications to schools. It is
well in place and in train to support schools as this important reform for our
nation, for our young people, comes into effect.
