Byford rail extension
895. Hon Steve Martin to
the parliamentary secretary representing the
Minister for Transport:
I refer to the
opening of the Byford station on the Armadale line on Sunday 12 October, which
included a media opportunity in which the minister and the Premier rode a train
featuring a Made in WA sticker.
(1) Are the C-series trains currently compatible
with the Armadale line and its stations, and running on it?
(2) If no to (1), did the government bring a
C-series train purely for the media opportunity?
(3) Was it explained to the public or the media on
the day that they would not actually be able to take a C-series train to or
from Byford?
(4) Is it accurate that the platform and
signalling upgrades program to enable the C-series to provide a full passenger
service across the line is not funded in the WA budget beyond a now completed
business case?
(5) Were promotional C-series train models handed
out on the day celebrating the opening of the line they are not compatible
with?

I thank the
honourable member for some notice of the question and provide the following
answer on behalf of the Minister for Transport.
(1)–(5) As with a number of heritage
stations on Perth's train network, not all stations on the Armadale line
currently have a six-car length platform. C-series trains are compatible with
the Armadale line. As has been the case for all new train lines, a community
event and inaugural train ride was held to mark the major milestone. Like other
train line openings, including the Ellenbrook line, a C-series train was used
for the first train ride, as it has a larger capacity to support the number of
people invited to commemorate the first train ride. Paper cut-out trains were
handed out to commemorate the opening of the Byford rail extension because they
are popular promotional items with community members and public transport
enthusiasts. The planning for the platform and signalling upgrades program
remains ongoing.
