The McGowan Government made a commitment for eligible public servants employed on casual or fixed-term basis to be considered for permanency, delivering better job security for workers and improved services for the community. This resulted in an additional 408 employees under the Teaching Award converting to permanent employment since 2018.
There is always a need for a certain number of fixed term contracts when you cannot fill the teaching position on an ongoing basis due to it being for a defined and limited program of work or a vacancy due to leave of absence.
As at 15 October 2020, the total employed under the Teaching Award by headcount and Full-Time Equivalent (FTE), and the number of those on fixed-term contracts was:
Total
Fixed-term
Headcount
26 972
5 031
FTE
23 036
3 562
