PRINCESS MARGARET HOSPITAL FOR CHILDREN —
MEGAZONE
883. Mr R.H. COOK to the Minister for
Health:
I refer to the children's
hospital Megazone, a room to help make the hospital environment as pleasant as
possible for WA's sickest kids, and the minister's recent
decision to sack the staff at the Megazone.
(1) Can the
minister confirm that he has now presided over the sacking of the play
coordinators and the ambulatory care coordinators and removed numerous junior
doctors from the hospital?
(2) Why is he now
seeking to remove the Megazone staff, who have given long and loyal service to
our sick kids?

(1)–(2) We
in government build health services; we do not go around sacking people. We do
not go around closing major facilities. We build new hospitals. We are building
a $1.2 billion new Perth Children's Hospital. Sadly, it is taking a lot
longer than we would like, and through no fault of the government, but it will
be an outstanding facility when it is completed. The new hospital has a fantastic
play area for children; I think it is on the fourth floor, if I remember
rightly. It is an absolutely magnificent nature‑based play area, which
everybody who visits it will absolutely love.
In
relation to the detailed staffing arrangements at the current Princess Margaret
Hospital for Children, I have not made any prescription about sacking people or
whatever. There is a change in that some staffing arrangements are being put in
place as a result of a new model being engaged in the move to the new Perth
Children's Hospital. Sick children in Western Australia will be much
better off when the move is completed. There are some modest changes being put
in place. We are not going around sacking people. There may have been some
decisions made by the management to ensure that the best value for money and
the best targeted services are being provided for sick children in the state.
