Hospital beds275.Mr Basil Zempilasto
theMinister for Health:I refer to my
question yesterday about the government's claim that it had added an additional
800 hospital beds over the past four years. Surely by now the minister has been
given a briefing note from her department that provides a breakdown of where
these 800 hospital beds are so she can inform the house.

Ms Meredith Hammat replied:I thank the member
for the question. The debate yesterday about health was a good one because it
was good to hear the Leader of the Opposition's members talking about how
important care is, not just in terms of beds, but right throughout the
community—a point we have been making over and again. As I explained to
the member yesterday, we have delivered over 800 beds since 2021 and we are
extremely proud of the work we are doing.Mr Basil Zempilasinterjected. The Speaker:Leader of the Opposition, you have asked
the question. Let the minister respond.Ms Meredith Hammat:As I have said many times in this
place, Western Australia has the strongest economy in the nation thanks to the
good work that we are doing, and it means more and more people, from both overseas
and interstate, want to come and live and work here. Our population is growing.
It is as though the whole population of the Northern Territory has moved here
recently. As I have said a number of times in this place, we are working to
meet this demand by strengthening our health system by investing in hospitals,
increasing our health workforce, and building new infrastructure like the women's
and babies' hospital.Delivering hospital
beds is an important part of that, which is why the member for Cannington and members
in our southern suburbs will be pleased to know that we have delivered more
than 90 additional beds at Bentley Health Service since 2021. The member for
Joondalup knows that we have delivered over 100 beds at Joondalup Health Campus
and have announced 60 more for those growing northern suburbs. I had the
opportunity to visit the member for Rockingham and Rockingham General Hospital
recently, and she knows we have delivered 30 beds to Rockingham General Hospital
since 2021, more than 100 beds at Royal Perth Hospital and more than 90 beds at
Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital. As I always say, we know there is still more to do,
which is why we have an ambitious agenda to deliver beds rightaround the
state to the people of Western Australia. Laverton Hospital, Geraldton Health
Campus—which we have talked many times about—and Bunbury Regional
Hospital are all having upgrades that will deliver more beds. We are very proud
of our commitments at the last election to deliver upgrades to Midland Health
Campus and Royal Perth Hospital, and, member, we are getting on with the job of
delivering the women's and babies' hospital in Murdoch. As I said yesterday,
we are also working to deliver care to people in the community, because the
best place for people to receive care is not always in a hospital bed. Our
government is reducing pressure on our hospitals through a range of initiatives
so that people can get care at home or in the community. Programs like our WA Virtual
Emergency Department (WAVED), adult health hubs and Hospital in the Home are all
important ways in which we are delivering care to Western Australians, no
matter where they live in this state.
