REMOTE INDIGENOUS COMMUNITIES — CLOSURES
1249. Hon SUE ELLERY to the
Minister for Education:
I refer to the Premier's announcement that he will
close many remote Aboriginal communities rather than pick up the costs
previously borne by the Australian government. How many schools are there in
the 247 remote Aboriginal communities in WA the Premier referred to?

AnswerView source ↗

I thank the honourable member for some notice of this
question.
The decision by the commonwealth government to withdraw its
funding for essential and municipal services to remote Aboriginal communities
will require the state government to make difficult but important decisions
about the future funding of services in a number of remote Aboriginal communities.
There are 52 public and private schools with 90 per cent or more Aboriginal
students. Of these, three are in remote areas and 45 are in very remote areas
of Western Australia, according to the Australian standard geographical
classification system. I will provide a list of the schools and their locations
by Thursday, 20 November 2014.
