CANNABIS — PESTICIDE RESEARCH
1108. Hon Dr BRIAN WALKER to the Minister for Agriculture and
Food:
I refer the minister to a recent
study published by academics in Brazil titled ''Cannabis sativa: A look
at protozoa, helminths, insect vectors, and pests'', which concludes
that cannabis sativa constituents can be effective in the formulation of
particular types of pesticides.
(1) Is the
Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development aware of this
research and the potential to use extracts from the cannabis plant to create
pesticides for vector control?
(2) Is the minister aware of any similar or complementary
research being undertaken here in Western Australia?
(3) If no to (2),
would the minister consider encouraging such research for the benefit of the WA
agricultural community as a whole?

I thank the honourable member for
some notice of the question.
(1)–(3) Pesticides used in Australian agriculture are
approved by the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority. I am not aware of any research in this area.
