GUILDFORD
HOTEL — REDEVELOPMENT
301. Ms M.M. QUIRK to the Minister for Heritage:
I refer to the fact that the
Guildford Hotel is facing its fifth winter without a roof.
(1) What is the current
status of the plans relating to the redevelopment of the heritage-listed
Guildford Hotel?
(2) When can the
people of Western Australia see some work being done to restore this priceless
asset?
(3) Has the
minister's chief of staff been involved in any decision making or
discussions on the Guildford Hotel, given her previous commercial relationship
with the owners?

(1)–(3) I
thank the member for Girrawheen very much for the question. With regard to the
Guildford Hotel, the City of Swan issued a development application approval,
subject to 29 conditions, in November 2011. It went through a State
Administrative Tribunal appeal process following that, and in recent times, in
2012, it has reached an end to that. When I came in as Minister for Heritage,
the owners were out for an expression of interest process. Probably what I
should do at the outset is point out for members' benefit that this is
a privately owned project. However, it is a very significant project and it is
also a heritage-listed project. I have met with the owners. I have to say I
found them —
Mrs
M.H. Roberts : Did your chief of staff go to the meeting with you?
Mr
A.P. JACOB : I will address that in just a second, member. I recognise that
that was part of the question.
I had a meeting with the owners,
just asking them for a verbal update on where they had gotten to with their
expression of interest process, and I have to say I was very happy with the
progress that they have reported back.
Mrs
M.H. Roberts : You are kidding!
Mr
A.P. JACOB : Obviously that would be commercial-in-confidence information.
In fact, it was interesting to get the interjection from the member for
Midland, because I am sure that if she or the member for Girrawheen sought to
meet with the owners, they would probably be happy to meet and have a
discussion with them.
Mrs
M.H. Roberts interjected.
The
SPEAKER : Member for Midland!
Mr
A.P. JACOB : We have taken action. It is a privately owned building that has
a development application approval on it. I am satisfied that they are making
very good progress, and we are happy to work with them to see this significant
icon redeveloped for the betterment of the local Guildford community.
Mrs
M.H. Roberts : You did not address the part that you were going to
address!
The
SPEAKER : Member for Midland, I call you to order for the first time; and,
also, you wait your turn and ask a question.
