Geraldton–Mount Magnet Road
298. Hon Julie Freeman to the parliamentary secretary representing
the Minister for Transport:
I refer to the
section of Geraldton–Mount Magnet Road which runs through the centre of
Mullewa between Maitland Road and Thomas Street and which completely
disintegrated in June 2024 but was not repaired until March 2025.
(1) What was the reason for the nine-month delay
in repairing this section of road?
(2) If weather restrictions are cited as the cause
of delay, is it the case that all road repairs are put on hold during the
winter months?
(3) Does Main Roads have a target for responding
to road repair requests, noting the important role it plays in the safety of
road users?
(4) In light of the Infrastructure Western
Australia report released in 2023, which recommends $225 million in upgrades to
the road, please outline the government's plans for these upgrades, including
the proposed timeframes.

On behalf of the
parliamentary secretary representing the Minister for Transport, I thank the
honourable member for some notice of the question. I provide this answer on
behalf of the Minister for Transport.
(1)–(4) Immediate repair work was
undertaken to make the road safe for road users. A monthly maintenance program
was then established to maintain the road during the winter months. This
allowed time for residual moisture to leave the pavement, enabling a more
permanent repair to be completed. Main Roads has submitted a business case to Infrastructure
Western Australia for upgrades to the Geraldton–Mount Magnet Road.
