SENIORS AND PENSIONERS — FREE OFF-PEAK PUBLIC TRANSPORT 91. Hon SUE ELLERY to the Minister for Transport: I refer to the public comments made today by Mr Mike O’Brien from the Australian Pensioners and Superannuants League WA that the government’s explanation of the reasons for the delay in the expansion of free public transport for seniors seems “a little hollow”. I ask — (1) Has the minister consulted with any seniors stakeholder organisations about his implementation plans for the policy; and, if not, why not? (2) Has the minister informed any seniors or other affected stakeholder groups about delays to the introduction of the expansion of free public transport; and, if not, why not? (3) Will the minister now commit to consultation with seniors and other stakeholder groups on the implementation of the policy? Hon SIMON O’BRIEN

(1)-(3) I thank the honourable member for her question, and also for her interest in this matter, although on this occasion her timing is probably more because of the politics than the interest. Hon Sue Ellery : I am a former Minister for Seniors! Hon SIMON O’BRIEN : Yes, and that is why I acknowledge the member’s interest in this matter. There has been consultation up until now with other government agencies. Other consultation will be taking place in the time ahead with a number of non-government organisations that represent stakeholders. I am saying that it will happen, and I undertake that it will happen, and I will be advising about that in due course. Business of the House Hon NORMAN MOORE : Mr President, I ask that the business of the house be resumed. I can hear some mutterings from the other side. The reason I am in a hurry at the moment is that I am trying to organise the evening so that the new member, Hon Carolyn Burton, will have the opportunity to speak as soon as possible after 7.30 pm. Hon Ljiljanna Ravlich interjected. The PRESIDENT : Order, Hon Ljiljanna Ravlich! The Leader of the House has the floor. He has only a few minutes left. Hon NORMAN MOORE : I will be quite happy to ignore any such requests in the future if that is how members opposite want to behave.
