QuestionView source ↗
I refer to planning control area No 80 regarding Stock Road between Leach Highway and South Street gazetted on 16 November 2004. (1) Now that a number of businesses have claimed that the impact of the Government’s action will cost them millions of dollars, does the minister stand by her earlier statement that the adverse impact of planning control area No 80 on property and business owners in dollar terms would be nil? (2) If so, on what information or other grounds does the minister base this opinion? (3) If no to (1), is it the case that the minister is making it up as she goes along? Hon Ljiljanna Ravlich: Oh, come on! Hon Simon O’Brien: I’m sure it is the case. The PRESIDENT: I call the parliamentary secretary to answer the first two parts of that question. Hon KEN TRAVERS

I so wanted to respond to question (3), Mr President! Hon Simon O’Brien: You don’t respond to a lot, so try it anyway. Hon KEN TRAVERS: I provide answers to Hon Simon O’Brien all the time. I go out of my way to help the member and this is the thanks I get at the end of the year in the season of goodwill. What does one do, leader? Hon Kim Chance: Ingrates. Hon KEN TRAVERS: It says more about them than it does about us, though. Several members interjected. The PRESIDENT: Order! Everyone is obviously eager to ask questions and members will get their chance as soon as the parliamentary secretary has answered this question. Hon KEN TRAVERS: I am advised - (1)-(3) Yes. Planning control area No 80 simply delineates the areas along the Stock Road frontage of properties that could either be negotiated to be purchased from landowners by the commission or otherwise compensated by the commission when landowners sought to increase the existing developments within those areas. Hon Simon O’Brien: You’re in denial! Several members interjected. The PRESIDENT: Order! Hon KEN TRAVERS: Even in situations in which land was purchased by the commission, existing businesses could continue to operate until such time as the land was required. In any event, any losses are fully compensable. Hon Simon O’Brien: There is denial!
