Western Power has provided the Minister for Energy with the following response.
a) 2006 - 11 network outages
2007 - 33 network outages
b) 2006 - The shortest outage was 46.4 minutes and the longest was 4.9 hours.
2007 - The shortest outage was 34.5 minutes and the longest was 6 hours.
c) 2006 - The average duration of outages was 1.7 hours, and the median was 1.2 hours.
2007 - The average duration of outages was 1.9 hours, and the median was 1.5 hours.
d) 2006 - The highest number of homes affected by outages was 251 and the lowest was 2.
2007 - The highest number of homes affected by outages was 254 and the lowest was 2.
e) 2006 - The average number of homes affected by each outage was 99.
2007 - The average number of homes affected by each outage was 60.
f) 2006 - The primary causes of these outages were equipment failures (3) and animals (2).
2007 - The primary causes of these outages were vegetation (8), planned outages (5), unknown fault causes (5) and birds (4).
Notes:
All information provided was for the locality of Serpentine supplied from all SWIS (South West Interconnected System) distribution feeders for both calendar years 2006 and 2007.
The definitions of the fault causes listed above are:

Planned outages
are when customers have been given a minimum of 3 days advance notice of the outage. Planned outages are generally as a result of doing improvement works on the network.

Equipment failure
is where the condition of the equipment results in equipment failing. This also includes pole top fire incidents.
· A fault cause listed as
vegetation
is when vegetation interferes with the equipment resulting in an outage. It also includes private vegetation.
· A fault cause listed as
animal
is when animal interferes with the equipment resulting in an outage.
· A fault cause listed as
bird
is when bird interferes with the equipment resulting in an outage.
· A fault cause is listed as
unknown
when the cause of the outage could not be determined.
