QuestionView source ↗
My question is to the Minister for Government Enterprises and the goldfields, or formerly the goldfields. The minister has been relieved of one portfolio in recent times. (1) What is the maximum daily and annual water supply capacity for the Kalgoorlie pipeline? (2) What is the maximum daily water consumption in Kalgoorlie recorded during last summer? (3) What is the total volume of water supply through the goldfields pipeline in 2003-04 and how much of it was delivered to the city of Kalgoorlie? (4) Has the minister considered reducing Kalgoorlie water prices to bring them closer to Perth prices; and, if not, why not? Hon NICK GRIFFITHS
AnswerView source ↗
I thank the honourable Leader of the Opposition for some notice of the question. I also thank him for reminding me of the very pleasant experience I had of being Minister for Goldfields-Esperance for almost two years. I have some regret that the Premier, in the re-allocation of portfolios, took that portfolio away from me, but he did provide me in lieu with the housing and works and land information portfolios. The answer is in these terms - (1) Maximum daily capacity is 36 million litres a day delivered into Kalgoorlie. The annual supply to Kalgoorlie is 12 775 million litres. (2) 41.13 million litres. Kalgoorlie storages make up the difference between consumption and the capacity of the pipeline. (3) 26 694 million litres were delivered into the pipeline from Mundaring and 8 656 million litres were delivered into Kalgoorlie. (4) Kalgoorlie water prices are aligned with Perth prices up to 350 kilolitres per annum consumption. This means that residential customers pay prices equivalent to Perth and only very high consumers pay higher prices. A comparison of charges is provided in the following table - Perth Kalgoorlie Service Charge $149.00 $149.00 Volumetric 0.150kL 41.6c/kL 41.6c/kL 150-350kL 67.4c/kL 67.4c/kL 350-450kL 91.0c/kL 85.7c/kL 450-550kL 91.0c/kL 121.6c/kL 550-750kL 120.0c/kL 144.2c/kL 750-950kL 120.0c/kL 230.6c/kL 950-1150kL 150.0c/kL 230.6c/kL 1150-1550kL 150.0c/kL 349.7c/kL 1550-1950kL 150.0c/kL 461.2c/kL >1950kL 150.0c/kL 556.6c/kL It is important to note that the Government pays the Water Corporation a $1.9 million annual subsidy to maintain the current water charges for Kalgoorlie-Boulder consumers.
