PUBLIC TRANSPORT — BAN ON PEOPLE WHO HAVE COMMITTED CRIMES
I refer to the Premier’s announcement in February that repeat offenders who are guilty of committing violence, graffiti, other vandalism or antisocial behaviour on trains and buses will be banned from using public transport. (1) Is it not the case that it would be virtually impossible to ban offenders from using public transport given that essentially the offenders would have to be given written permission to be banned? (2) Is it true that the fanfare and bravado that were part of the Premier’s announcement do not match the process involved in banning offenders from using public transport? Mr A.J. CARPENTER

(1)-(2) The short answers are no and no. The fact is that a relatively small number of people create very unfortunate circumstances on our public transport, including on trains and buses but particularly on the trains, as members know. We wanted to do something about it because the government has a responsibility to do something about it and we are doing something about it. The people of Western Australia appreciate the fact that we are doing — Several members interjected. The SPEAKER : I call to order the member for Hillarys and the Minister for Planning and Infrastructure. Mr A.J. CARPENTER : I catch public transport. I catch the train and my children catch the trains and buses. I believe that we should be able to do that without our wellbeing being threatened, interrupted or put in danger by a very small handful of people who act completely outside of acceptable norms. We are doing something about it. Surely on this matter the opposition will support us.
