For each of the following hospitals; Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, Royal Perth Hospital, St John of God Midland Public Hospital, Joondalup Health Campus, Fiona Stanley Hospital, Peel Health Campus, Rockingham General Hospital and Armadale/Kelmscott District Memorial Hospital, I ask: (a) for each day of July 2018, how many patients were admitted as private patients; (b) for each day of July 2018, how many ward beds were not utilised (by any patient); and (c) for each day of July 2018, how many wards were unutilised?

(a) The Hospital Morbidity Data Collection (HMDC) only includes episodes that have been completed (discharged) to ensure that each record is complete and accurate. This is standard practice in Health reporting across all jurisdictions and thus WA Health has provided the number of separations (discharges) on each day in July 2018, not the number of admissions.
In July 2018, the number of hospital separations (discharges) for private patients was as follows:

Peel Health Campus (PHC) - Is a public/private hospital and under contract with SMHS PHC does not report on private patients. PHC is funded on a ‘per public patient’ and therefore, beds are funded only if occupied by public patients.
St John of God Midland Public Hospital – Nil.
(b) Midnight census data has been utilised for all sites except Joondalup (7:00am census) which does not necessarily provide the most accurate depiction of bed utilisation across the day. For example a number of beds reported as unutilised at midnight were in fact occupied during the day and vacated in the evening to ensure capacity for overnight emergency admissions and the next morning’s planned admissions.
