(1) Is the minister aware of any proposed regulations designed to prevent persons under the age of 18 years from operating harvesting and carting machinery on private property on Western Australian farms? (2) In view of the anticipated shortage of such operators this season, will he assure this House that he will use his best endeavours with his cabinet colleagues to stop such silly propositions both now and for as long as he remains a minister of the Crown? Hon KIM CHANCE

(1) Although it is not strictly within my portfolio, I have had advice, albeit second-hand, from the appropriate minister that he is aware of no such proposed regulations. (2) I am happy to answer in the affirmative but with the caveat I applied some days ago to a similar question regarding the safety of persons operating machines on farms, and particularly the safety of children either operating or being near the operation of such machines. With that caveat satisfied, I am happy to answer in the affirmative.
