CAPE LEVEQUE ROADBOYANUP SALEYARDS
726. Mr M. McGOWAN to the Premier:
I have a supplementary question. I ask
part (3) of the question again: why did the Premier not consult with the
relevant minister, the Minister for Transport; Agriculture and Food, before
making either of these obviously planned and very expensive announcements?

Nothing is planned as yet for the
Boyanup saleyards, but I certainly hope that in the future we can see them
moved. That is going to be an issue.
Mr
M. McGowan interjected.
Mr
C.J. BARNETT : I am just answering the Leader of the Opposition's
question.
Mr
M. McGowan : No, you're not.
Mr
C.J. BARNETT : If the Leader of the Opposition shows some courtesy, I will
actually finish it.
Mr
M. McGowan : This is the second time I have had to ask the Premier.
The
SPEAKER : That is enough.
Mr
C.J. BARNETT : The Leader of the Opposition asked multiple questions.
Nothing is happening with the
Boyanup saleyards other than the fact that I think we should be thinking about
what happens when the lease runs out in 2021, and that is all I am doing.
Mr
M. McGowan : Yes, big announcements.
Mr C.J. BARNETT :
No, they are not big. That was not a big announcement. There was no
announcement about Boyanup other than the fact that I went and had a look at
the prospective future site. What is wrong with that?
With the Cape Leveque Road, yes, I announced that as part of
the state conference. Information relating to the Cape Leveque Road is not new.
I have been talking about sealing the road to Cape Leveque for several years.
It is clearly unacceptable that there are some 1 300 Aboriginal people living
along the Dampier Peninsula who do not have a sealed road to Broome. That is
unacceptable. It is a road that is frequently closed during the time of
flooding. Why should —
Several members interjected.
The
SPEAKER : Members!
Mr
C.J. BARNETT : I am answering the Leader of the Opposition's
question.
I have regarded for several years
that that is unacceptable. The other point is that those communities along
there provide a great opportunity for tourists from Broome —
Mr
M. McGowan : Why did not you consult the minister?
The
SPEAKER : Leader of the Opposition!
Mr
C.J. BARNETT : I am answering the Leader of the Opposition's
question.
That will provide a great
opportunity for tourists from Broome to use the sealed road to be able to visit
communities. It provides opportunities for tourism development for Broome and
Aboriginal communities, of which there are several—quite a number—on
the peninsula. The information relating to the costs of that was obtained in
exactly the same way I obtain information through every ministerial office and
department.
