I refer the minister to his correspondence to me dated 8 February this year regarding the Department of Education and Training’s failure to appoint a second deputy principal to Mt Magnet District High School in which he stated - I am informed that . . . the principal, in consultation with the School Council, Parents and Citizens’ Association and deputy principals reviewed the need for a second deputy principal position. (1) Is the minister aware that in fact no review of the position took place? (2) Is the minister aware that even the second deputy principal at the time was not consulted about the retention of the position? (3) Given the minister’s misunderstanding of this situation, will he now undertake to ensure that Mt Magnet District High School is awarded a second deputy principal position? Mr A.J. CARPENTER

I thank the member for some notice of this question, because there is some detail to it. (1) No. The position was reviewed. (2) The Department of Education and Training has given me a note today stating that the information from the previous principal, Ms Anne Napolitano, is that the position was discussed with the second deputy. (3) This is the most important part of the question. I have no misunderstanding. However, the needs of the school have been assessed in the past two weeks. Mr Brian Simpson, the current principal, and Mr Rod Baker, director of schools for the mid west district, have supported the request for a second deputy principal, and that was approved on 18 March 2003.
