BUILDING COMMISSION — REMEDY ORDERS
47. Mr P.J. RUNDLE to the Premier:
I refer to the removal of the
Building Commissioner, Kristin Berger, as the disaster over defective plumbing
continues to affect thousands of WA families and home owners.
(1) Can the
Premier confirm that no remedy orders have been issued by the Building
Commission, as is standard practice, to give some comfort to those families?
(2) Is it
appropriate that Building Commissioner Kristin Berger has been approached to
lead urgent policy initiatives for the Premier's government?
(3) What measures will the
government take to help those affected families?

(1)–(3) We
work with families all the time in relation to any building defects or problems
they might experience as a result of building
activity. A good example is the work we are doing around those families who
have experienced burst pipes in their homes. We continue to make sure
that we work with them through Building and Energy to ensure that they have the
supports they need to get the recourse that they need.
Kristin Berger is a highly
credentialed public servant and Ms Berger has been approached to lead some
urgent economic development priorities for the state government. In particular,
she will be assisting to deliver our economic diversification strategy. The
diversification strategy involves looking at a role for Kristin to provide her
high-level skills in areas such as supporting the delivery of the investment
attraction fund, supporting priority state agreement projects and improving
interface between Ports and Planning. We know that we are facing a range of
challenges right across our residential construction market, such as supply chain and workforce constraints. Of
course, a lot of companies were overcommitted in the period after the COVID-19 pandemic. We are working
through these issues and obviously need to make sure that when things
have not been done right, customers have the remedies they need to get justice.
