Retail barring orders
565. Mr Basil Zempilas to
the Premier:
I refer to retail
barring orders that have worked successfully in other jurisdictions to reduce
violence and aggression against retail workers. Why has the state government
failed to introduce legislation to protect retail workers to ensure that new
powers could be in place this year?

I thank the member
for the question because it provides me with an opportunity to remind everyone
that it was the WA Labor Party that took this policy to the election. That came
on top of the legislation for retail workers that significantly elevated the
penalties associated with assaults on retail workers. We are working closely
with all the stakeholders, including the retailers themselves, the workers
representatives, the workers themselves and the police around the way these
laws should be configured. That work is significantly advanced. Of course,
legislation does not just pop out of the woodwork. It has to be worked on to
make sure that it is effective and will do what we intend it to do.
I think it is
extraordinary that the Leader of the Opposition is the one who in this session
of Parliament is talking about standing up for retail workers when just before
lunch he moved amendments to legislation in this place that would take a public
holiday away from them! I am not quite sure where he stands on this issue.
