ELECTORAL COMMISSIONER
374. Hon KATE DOUST to the
Minister for Electoral Affairs:
I refer to the
minister's press release issued on 26 April 2013 entitled ''New
role for WA Electoral Commissioner''.
(1) Why has it
taken nearly an entire year for the Western Australian Electoral Commission to
complete the formal process of filling in the position of Electoral
Commissioner?
(2) When does
the minister perceive the position will be formally filled?
(3) Is it the
minister's intention to keep Mr Chris Avent in the position of acting
Electoral Commissioner indefinitely?

I thank the member for some notice of this question.
(1)–(3)
It is not unusual for a position such as the Electoral Commissioner to take
time to fill. There is nothing wrong with that process. It is a very
significant role and position. It is out of my hands completely. I have no
problems with the process thus far because we want to ensure that we get the
best possible candidate. I will not pass comment about Mr Chris Avent's
role in the future until we learn the outcome of the established position
which, I imagine, will be very soon.
