WEST AUSTRALIAN FOOTBALL COMMISSION —
BURSWOOD STADIUM
392. Mr P.B. WATSON to the Minister for
Sport and Recreation:
I have a supplementary question. How
will Auskick, WAFL and country football be funded without guaranteed support
for the West Australian Football Commission?

AnswerView source ↗

I will say one thing, member. Many
years ago country football got very little support and it was through
governments and people helping the West Australian Football Commission that it
got support. It was also through the good management of football itself, from
the commission's point of view, and from the metropolitan leagues, the
country leagues and the sponsorship and support of business. The support of our
private sector in country football makes up a heap of it, with sponsorships. I
went to the fortieth anniversary of Landmark, and the reason we have had 40 years
is that we have been able to build those partnerships. That is important at the
grassroots level. This weekend is the Great Southern Colts Carnival, which is
the longest continuous running colts carnival in Australian sports; it is over
100 years old. It has the support of the country football league, through the
football commission, and also the support of our sponsors from around country
Western Australia. Auskick and country football will continue to be supported.
The football commission has had its own challenges, and I will work closely
with it to assist it.
