Since September 2001 the Western Australian Museum has, and continues to, undertake research into three species of black cockatoo, Baudin's Black Cockatoo (
Calyptorhynchus baudinii),
Carnaby's Black Cockatoo (
Calyptorhynchus latirostris
) and the Forest Red-tailed Black Cockatoo
(Calyptorhynchus banksii
ssp.
naso)
.
Information is being gathered on the distribution, status, relative abundance, habitat preferences, breeding season and diet for each species as well as details of nest trees, incubation period, fledgling period, breeding behaviour and migrations and movements.
This research has and continues to help with the establishment of recovery and management plans, identification of threats, improved understanding of breeding biology and requirements, and development of the Cockatoo Care website. (

Original funding for the Cockatoo Care Program was from the Water Corporation (2002 - 2007) and from 2007 - 2009 corporate funding was provided for ongoing fieldwork. The research continues, with the additional day-to-day running of the program managed by a volunteer based at the WA Museum and supervised by WA Museum employee R.E. Johnstone. The fieldwork component of the project is carried out by R.E. Johnstone and a part-time contract field research officer.
