KALUMBURU - SEXUAL ASSAULT CHARGES
I refer to the recent sexual assault charges at Kalumburu in which the Kalumburu Aboriginal Corporation’s deputy chairman was charged with indecently dealing with two 12-year-olds on four occasions and another man was charged with 20 counts of sexually penetrating a child under the age of 13, three counts of indecently dealing with a child under the age of 13, encouraging a child to engage in sexual behaviour and showing pornographic material to a child. (1) Did the justice department employ either of the men as departmental officers in the area or in any capacity for the justice department; and, if so, in what capacity? (2) Were any of the 12-year-olds placed in the care of either of these men in an official capacity? (3) What was the relationship, in either an official capacity or a relationship grouping, of any of the 12-year-old children to either of the men charged? I gave the names of the men to the ministerial officers. Hon JON FORD

I thank Hon Robyn McSweeney for some notice of the question. On behalf of the Minister for Child Protection, the Attorney General has supplied the following answer - (1) There is no record of Mr Clarence Ghara or Mr Bruno Waina having been employed by either the Department of Corrective Services, the Department of the Attorney General or the former Department of Justice. There is also no record of any payments being made to the persons in question. (2)-(3) For legal reasons, the department cannot release information that may lead to the identification of minors.
