(1) Given that a 1998 Main Roads’ report stated that Jarrahdale Road was unsuitable for B-double livestock transport, will the minister explain why he granted 35 B-double permits last month? (2) Were Shire of Serpentine-Jarrahdale councillors present at the 4 October meeting, when he made his decision? Hon M.J. CRIDDLE

(1)-(2) I met with representatives of the Shire of Serpentine-Jarrahdale. I cannot remember the exact date, but I think it was 4 October. At the conclusion of the meeting, people were left in no doubt about the decision made. I will not go into the detail of the conversation, but there was a clear understanding about the arrangements; that is, a report is to go the council in the near future, which will give an outline of the requirements of the road structures in the area and the future requirements for the roads. We have agreed to upgrade the roads to a suitable standard if that is required. An agreement was made that there would be some upgrading to one particular section. I understand the basis of the report is that some discussion will be held about a road around the Jarrahdale town site. We will have those discussions with representatives of the shire, probably in the next two or three weeks. Hon Norm Kelly: The trucks are travelling down there now. Hon M.J. CRIDDLE: Road trains have been travelling in that area for a long, long while.
