Given that the Department of Parks and Wildlife's definition of karri forest is an area dominated by karri trees, with an existing or potential crown cover of overstorey strata about equal to or greater than 20 per cent, and that this includes pure karri and karri in any degree of mixture with marri, jarrah, blackbutt or tingle species: (a) how many hectares of pure karri forest are there within the Forest Management Plan area; (b) how many hectares of pure karri forest are vested in the Conservation Commission; (c) how many of the 190,160 hectares of karri forest within the Forest Management Plan area are forest where 50 per cent or more of the trees are karri; and (d) how many of the 173,960 hectares of karri forest vested in the Conservation Commission are forest where 50 per cent or more of the trees are karri?

The Minister for Environment has provided the following response.
(a)-(b) 'Pure' karri forest has been recorded as patches of karri dominant forest which may contain up to 20 per cent of other tree species. As at December 2014, within the
Forest Management Plan 2014-23
area there were 104,900 hectares of pure karri forest on lands vested in the Conservation Commission, and a further 900 hectares on freehold land held in the name of the Conservation and Land Management Executive Body. In addition, there is approximately 14,710 hectares of karri forest on private land within the Forest Management Plan area, for which the relative species composition (and hence proportion of 'pure' karri forest) is unknown.
(c)-(d) The available forest type mapping has not recorded the level of detail necessary to calculate these statistics for the entire forest estate.
