Helen Morton questions the government's policy on accommodating mentally ill patients near family and the prioritization of patients from the south metropolitan area for accommodation in Kelmscott and Armadale. The Minister responds that there is no such policy and that accommodation is based on suitability, vacancies, and choice.

I thank the honourable member for some notice of the question. (1) There is no government policy on providing accommodation to the mentally ill within the catchment area of family members. (2) Five of the eight - that is, 62.5 per cent - residents to be accommodated at the Kelmscott Community Options homes originate from or have close family members living within the south metropolitan area. The Kelmscott facility was the preferred choice for the remaining three residents; that is, 37.5 per cent. (3) There will be no service catchment boundaries for this accommodation service. Accommodation in the community supported residential units will be determined by residents’ suitability, available vacancies and consumer choice.
