As local government is the important third tier of government in Western Australia and is represented through the Department of Local Government at the state level - (a) will the Premier give an undertaking that the Department of Local Government will retain its existing status as a stand-alone department post the review of the structure of the Western Australian public sector; and (b) if not, why not? Hon KIM CHANCE
AnswerView source ↗
It is proposed to establish a department of state known as the department of regional development and local government. The activities of the new department will involve a consolidation of the roles of the Department of Local Government and the regional functions currently undertaken by the Department of Commerce and Trade. The new department is expected to better support the needs and aspirations of regional communities; to facilitate closer coordination of regional development initiatives with the local government network across the State; to forge a stronger bridge and synergy between the two functions; to provide better support and assistance to the regional development commissions; and to strengthen the role of local government in supporting and influencing regional development.
