Public Transport Authority—Commuter payment options
49. Hon Tjorn Sibma to the p arliamentary secretary representing the Minister for
Transport :
I refer to the Public
Transport Authority's project to modernise payment options for public transport
commuters announced in the minister's media statement on 29 September 2023.
(1) Was the full rollout of upgraded validators
across the entire public transport network completed in the first half of 2024
as the minister promised?
(2) If no to (1), what precise technical problems
have impeded the project's timely delivery?
(3) How frequently has the minister been briefed
on the project's challenges and what has been the minister's response?
(4) Has there been any increase to the project's
budget to overcome these challenges and, if so, by what amount?
(5) When will commuters be able to pay for their
fares with credit and debit cards, smart phones and wearable technology?

I thank the
honourable member for some notice of the question and provide the following
answer on behalf of the Minister for Transport.
(1)–(5) I note that the shadow Minister
for Transport, Hon Steve Martin, has asked a very similar question on notice. A
live pilot will commence shortly, following the resolution of some software
issues. In the meantime, the existing SmartRider system continues to serve
passengers well, with over 90% of passengers using a SmartRider.
