SOUTH PERTH FORESHORE
337. Mr J.E. McGRATH to the Minister for
Environment:
Could the minister please update the house on the delivery of yet
another Liberal election commitment with the completion of important foreshore
works in the magnificent City of South Perth?
Mr D.J. Kelly : Don't talk about climate change;
let's talk about the foreshore in South Perth!
The
SPEAKER : Member for Bassendean, I call
you to order for the first time. We are just chewing up time here for nothing.

I thank the member for South Perth for the question, because this is an
important issue, particularly for his electorate. It is something the member
for South Perth took to the 2013 election, committing to his community that if
re-elected, this Liberal–National state government would partner with
the City of South Perth to replace some 355 metres of river walls that were
collapsing along the South Perth foreshore. The member for South Perth
pursued me with vigour to ensure that this government indeed delivered for his
constituents of South Perth—and that is exactly what we have done.
Those walls were in a deplorable state. The South Perth foreshore is one of the
tourism icons of the city, indeed, of the state. The walls had collapsed
significantly, so we as a state government injected significant extra funds
into the riverbank program so that we could partner with the City of South
Perth to deliver this upgrade. We have delivered in South Perth in partnership
with the council not only 355 metres of new river wall, but also a brand-new
promenade and a public meeting space with state‑of‑the-art
lighting. It is a great compliment to the member for South Perth, who
championed his local people. In fact, some 50 000 people have now walked on
that promenade, I have been informed. I think it is important to bring this
project to the house's attention, because I had occasion to look at the
Labor Party's WA Labor website recently, which very prominently
features what it calls BrokenPromises.org.au, on which it purports to be
honestly keeping us to account.
Mr
D.J. Kelly interjected.
The
SPEAKER : Member for Bassendean, I call you to order for the second time.
Mr
A.P. JACOB : I bring this to the attention of members opposite because the
website states that the Liberal Party promised money to fix the South Perth
river walls and that no funding was provided. Members opposite, not only has
funding been provided, we have built it and 50 000 people have walked on it!
Several members interjected.
The
SPEAKER : The member for Wanneroo is now on three calls.
Several members interjected.
The
SPEAKER : Members for Fremantle and Warnbro! Minister—a short answer
through the Chair.
Mr
A.P. JACOB : Thank you, Mr Speaker.
I am sure that there is a level of
irony about a broken promises website that gives several levels of
misinformation; this is only one example of in my portfolio. This is a classic
one for me, because it has been great for the member for South Perth to see
this program delivered. In fact, under this government, more than $12 million
has been delivered to local governments to fix river walls across our
foreshore. It is a great compliment to the member for South Perth in standing
up for his community.
