Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital— Legionella bacteria
348. Mr Adam Hort to
the Minister for Health:
I refer to the
reports in the media last week that testing for Legionella at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital returned results above the minimum benchmark
59 times from January 2023 to May 2025.
(1) How many notifications has the minister
received for Legionella test results above
the minimum benchmark at Charlies?
(2) Has the minister been advised of any patients
receiving precautionary treatment because of the 59 test results that exceeded
the minimum benchmark?

(1)–(2) I thank the member for the
question. Again, I make the point that our hospitals are safe. They conduct
regular testing for Legionella disease. It
is something that is found in a range of different buildings, including
shopping centres. The testing happens in hospitals and in other major buildings
as well. It is just part of doing business. I want to be clear: our hospitals
are safe, and Charlies is a safe hospital as well.
Clearly, there is a need for
maintenance in older hospitals. That is why, this week, our government has
announced $50 million to provide maintenance not just for Charlie Gairdner but
also Royal Perth Hospital and the Armadale Health Service. We have listened,
and we want to provide additional maintenance on top of the significant funds
that are already spent on maintenance. Some $271 million has been committed
just in this financial year for hospital maintenance as well. We are making
significant investments, as we talked about here last week, in Charlies in
terms of upgrading the emergency departments and updating and expanding the
intensive care unit.
Our
hospitals are safe. We do regular testing for Legionella ,
not just at Charlies but at all our hospitals, to ensure that that is the
