FOREST PRODUCTS
COMMISSION — TWO-TIER KARRI FORESTS — HARVESTING
155. Hon DIANE EVERS to the minister representing the
Minister for Forestry:
I refer to the recent announcement
of a 12-month freeze on logging of two-tier karri forests and the minister's
quoted comments that ''the required native timber volumes under the
current Forest Management Plan can be sourced without harvesting two-tier
karri areas during the period of the 2020 harvest plan.''
(1) Will the
minister please table a map showing the areas that will be harvested during the
2020 period?
(2) Will the minister consider conducting a deliberative
process to determine the future of the karri forest prior to any decision by
the Forest Products Commission to cancel the freeze beyond 2020; and, if not,
why not?

AnswerView source ↗

I thank the member for this
question. The Minister for Forestry has provided the following answer.
(1) The Forest
Products Commission's 2020 indicative harvest plan outlines the forest
coupes that are planned to be harvested in full or in part over the course of
the year. I table maps of the indicative harvest areas. The plan is indicative
only. The final decisions on where to conduct harvesting operations are made by
the Forest Products Commission. In 2020, the Forest Products Commission can
meet its customers' demands without harvesting in two-tier areas. Areas
of two-tier karri forest greater than two hectares in size will not be
harvested in 2020.
[See paper 3654 .]
(2) The Forest
Products Commission's future harvest plans will be guided by
operational requirements and customer needs. There will be significant public
consultation through the preparation of the next forest management plan by the Conservation and Parks Commission. The
mechanisms and approach to community engagement for the next forest
management plan is a matter for the Conservation and Parks Commission.
