Can the minister please provide this House with a brief report concerning the construction of the new $42m Joondalup Police Academy; and will the minister confirm that once the academy has been built the Joondalup region will have more sworn or unsworn police officers than any other region in the Perth metropolitan area? Mr PRINCE

The projected budget for the academy at Joondalup, including the cost of site acquisition, is $45m. The construction program started on 22 May this year. Site establishment is in progress, the site is fenced, site accommodation is there and services have been installed. Construction has commenced with the main sewer line and gas and water ring mains completed. Installation of soak wells and preparation of footings is under way. It is anticipated that the academy will be completed in late 2001 and will start operations in early 2002. When it is operating at full capacity, it will accommodate about 500 staff and students. Those staff will not be included in staffing numbers for the Joondalup police district. It is a major capital outlay. The Midland operational centre is also a major capital outlay. At the same time, we are building new and replacement facilities in Bunbury, Busselton, Kellerberrin, Rockingham, South Perth, Victoria Park, and in Kiara, and new facilities have just been opened in Clarkson, Geraldton and Wiluna. No doubt the member for Bassendean is interested in Kiara. It is $2m worth of new police station. I table the graphic. The member for Bassendean is invited to try to find the multanova.
