I have a sensible and constructive question about the referendum. I refer the Premier to the comments of Professor Greg Craven about the proposed referendum on retail trading hours. He is quoted as saying - As an exercise in democracy, the questions are not adequate as they stand . . . because they lack context. (1) Is the Premier aware that the Referendums Act does not provide for a preamble to referendum questions in order to put the questions in context? (2) Given that considerable concerns have been raised about the wording of the referendum questions, will the Premier agree to work with the coalition and other parties to redraft the questions to make them fairer and balanced? Dr G.I. GALLOP

(1)-(2) I will not mention the Kama Sutra ! The Opposition is all over the place. It is a rabble. The claim by Professor Craven that this debate lacks context is wrong. This issue has been debated year in and year out in Western Australia. That is the context and it will be the context of the referendum campaign. The referendum legislation will be passed through this House. The Government believes that the questions are exactly the same as those asked in every household, at dinner tables and in every workplace in Western Australia. Mr M.W. Trenorden: You’ve never been to one! Dr G.I. GALLOP: The member is very much out of touch. Several members interjected. The SPEAKER: Order, members! Dr G.I. GALLOP: Those are the questions asked all around Western Australia. We are giving people a chance to answer them. The Greens (WA) indicated yesterday - Mr J.H.D. Day interjected. The SPEAKER: I call the member for Darling Range to order for the second time. Dr G.I. GALLOP: The Government believes that the questions are good ones. The Greens (WA) have indicated that when the legislation reaches the Legislative Council they may have some suggestions. Of course, we will consider them. Mr D.F. Barron-Sullivan: So you will amend the questions? Dr G.I. GALLOP: No. We think they are very good questions. The thought that the great Australian Labor Party would sit in a room with the Liberal Party to try to have dialogue on this issue is the last thing on our minds. Who would we have dialogue with? The Leader of the Opposition? The Deputy Leader of the Opposition? The Leader of the National Party? Hon Peter Foss? Hon Norman Moore? Which Liberal Party would we have a dialogue with?
