ACACIA PRISON —
STAFFING
362. Dr D.J. HONEY to the Minister for Corrective Services:
I have a supplementary question. Is
the minister simply dismissing the concerns —
Several members interjected.
The SPEAKER : Order, please!
Dr D.J. HONEY : —
about staffing levels expressed by senior prison officers?

AnswerView source ↗

No. I am saying that I do not think
that Andy Smith has spoken to Damien, so he does not know the circumstances of this particular incident. I admire and respect
the Western Australian Prison Officers' Union; I meet with it regularly and I admire its advocacy on behalf of its members. That is what good unions
do, and it does that well. But in this particular
instance, with a violent assault without warning or provocation on an officer
standing right beside another prison officer, who was clearly not
suffering from inadequate resources or inadequate numbers of staff, it is just
wrong to suggest that that was the cause or somehow contributed to the incident
that the member is referring to.
