Hon. Norman Moore questions the allocation of $1.7m for teacher police screening announced in 2004, particularly regarding the screening of staff employed before 1997. The response indicates some screening has occurred, but the bulk of checks were on staff employed after 1997.

I refer to a media release by the previous Minister for Education in January 2004, announcing $1.7m for teacher police screening. I also refer to an article in
The West Australian
on January 29 2005, in which the Department of Education and Training admitted that although all teachers commencing in State schools since 1997 have required a police clearance, no checking had been done of teachers and administrative staff employed before that date, I ask -
(1) What happened to the $1.7million promised by the previous Minister?
(2) Has any screening of employees before 1997 been done?
(3) If so, how many teachers and administrative staff have been checked?
(4) If not, when will the screening commence, given that the previous Minister promised it was a two-year project, putting children first?
