When the member refers to the
Yamatji native title claim, I assume he is talking about Geraldton, because the
Yamatji, of course, have a range of native title claims across the midwest.
Mr V.A.
Catania : Yes.
Mr B.S. WYATT :
It is important to be specific about these things, Mr Speaker.
(1)–(3) There
is a limit to what I can say because there are Federal Court orders in place
around what can be said publicly. But I will make some generic comments,
because I got a question from the member for Kalgoorlie during budget estimates
earlier this year. For two years now, we have been in negotiation with the
traditional owner negotiating team with the Geraldton alternative settlement
agreement process. I have appeared before the court as part of this process. I am
keen to have it resolved. An offer has been put. The Yamatji Land and Sea
Council, the representative body, has been funded by the commonwealth to do its
part of the negotiation—that is, to bring the traditional owners
together and go through the process of negotiation and decision-making for
those who have the right to make a decision. The plan is to meet the court
timetables that have been set by the Federal Court of Australia.
