Principals now have increased autonomy regarding how they spend their schools’ one-line budgets and how many staff they employ. Teaching FTE levels will fluctuate from pay period to pay period. In particular, teaching FTE levels are higher during term and lower during vacation.
For the Department of Education’s pay run of 16 June 2016, which is the pay date immediately preceding 21 June 2016, the number of people employed in schools under the Teachers (Public Sector Primary and Secondary Education) Award 1993 totalled 22,677 FTE (25,028 headcount).
Of the figures above, 5,226 FTE (6,396 headcount) are employed on fixed-term contracts. Note that FTE figures include casual employees; headcount figures do not. Figures given are the numbers of teachers, principals, deputies, head of departments/learning areas, and school psychologists employed under the Teachers Award.
The figures provided for fixed-term staff are based on employment contracts in the Department’s HR system. An employee included as fixed-term may also hold a permanent position.
