GOODS AND SERVICES TAX — TREASURER'S
COMMENTS
293. Mr M. McGOWAN to the Treasurer:
I refer to the Treasurer's
comments in The Australian newspaper
last week when he said he was ''very disappointed'' in the
efforts of the federal Liberals to obtain more GST for WA, especially the ones
in cabinet, and to his advocacy of a vote against the federal Liberal Party.
(1) Which federal Liberals are not
doing enough to get WA its fair share of GST?
(2) Can the
Treasurer identify which of the following WA cabinet ministers he is most
disappointed in: Hon Julie Bishop; Hon Christian Porter; Hon Michael Keenan;
Hon Ken Wyatt; Hon Michaela Cash; or Hon Mathias Cormann?

The
SPEAKER : Thank you!
Dr
M.D. NAHAN : Yes, I continue my advocacy —

The
SPEAKER : Member for Butler!
Dr
M.D. NAHAN : I continue my advocacy, in the most vigorous manner, for
getting reform of the GST. I continue that, and —

The SPEAKER :
Member for Butler!
Dr
M.D. NAHAN : I am very critical of the success in this area of the Turnbull
government. It has given us $1 billion, but we need reform of the GST mechanism
itself, and I will continue that. In order to dance and do a tango, you need
two. Where is the Labor Party? It is non-existent. Oh no, it is; excuse me—I
was wrong: the Shorten Labor Party is committed to doing nothing! That is what
it says. It will not change the system. Have we heard any of these people
opposite, or their federal Labor colleagues, making a stand? Not at all! We
need change, and we will drive it. These people will sit on the fence, whining
and whingeing, while $4.7 billion gets ripped out of this state. If the member

The
SPEAKER : Members!
Dr
M.D. NAHAN : On the other side at federal level, at state level, the Labor Party
has done nothing but systematically undermine every attempt we have made to
reform this. It has consistently argued that it cannot be done, will not be
done, and it has never stood up for Western Australia; never!
Mr
W.J. Johnston interjected.
Withdrawal of Remark
The SPEAKER : Just withdraw that,
please.
Mr W.J. JOHNSTON : I withdraw.
The
SPEAKER : Thank you. I call you to order for the first time.

Dr
M.D. NAHAN : I will continue to stand up for Western Australia on GST, with
or without the Labor Party, but I ask the Leader of the Opposition to be the
leader he claims to be.
Point of Order
Mr W.J. JOHNSTON : There is
provision in the standing orders, under standing order 75, for the Treasurer to
ask the Leader of the Opposition a question. If he wants to use that provision,
he should do so; otherwise, he should not use these ridiculous debating topics.
The SPEAKER : Thank you. Wind it
up, please.
