National Climate Risk Assessment report—Government
response
928. Hon Dr Brian Walker to the Leader of the House representing the Minister for
Climate Resilience:
I refer the Premier
to the federal government's Australia's National
Climate Risk Assessment report, which makes alarming reading for those
of us in WA, with what I can only assume are now government-backed predictions
of increased drought, loss of biodiversity, damage to marine ecosystems and
increased risks to infrastructure, to name but a few of the issues raised.
(1) Will the minister confirm that the Cook Labor
government intends to coordinate a whole-of-government response to this timely
but alarming report?
(2) If yes to (1), which ministry or department
will take responsibility for the coordination of the whole-of-government
response?
(3) Within what timeframe can residents of Western
Australia reasonably expect to see a comprehensive and cohesive plan to tackle
the life-changing and life-threatening risks to our way of life, as identified in
the federal assessment?

I thank the
honourable member for some notice of the question.
(1)–(3) The National
Climate Risk Assessment was undertaken by the Commonwealth's Australian
Climate Service and focuses on nationally significant climate risks—that
is, those with consequences severe enough to have a national impact and
requiring a coordinated national response.
The state government will
continue to engage with the Commonwealth through the Energy and Climate Change
Ministerial Council (ECMC), chaired by the federal Minister for Climate Change
and Energy, Hon Chris Bowen MP.
