I thank the member for Bassendean for the question. Western Australia is experiencing golden economic times and the state is doing very well economically with very low rates of unemployment and strong economic growth. We would like to ensure that all Western Australians are the beneficiaries of this economic success. The best way to do that is to ensure that any Western Australian, any young Western Australian in particular, who wants a training opportunity is given the opportunity to undertake an apprenticeship or a traineeship. Under the Gallop and Carpenter governments we have seen an enormous increase in the number of people undertaking apprenticeships and traineeships. With apologies to the Deputy Premier, I have a chart that shows the incredible growth in the number of apprentices and trainees over the past few years. As members can see, seven years ago there were roughly 18 000 people in apprenticeships or traineeships in Western Australia. A year ago that figure was approaching 36 000. I have not used this chart since that time. I should have used it; it has been sitting in my office. There are now 36 680 people in apprenticeships or traineeships, which is double the number of a mere seven years ago. That chart says it all. Mr A.J. Carpenter : Breathtaking. Mr M. McGOWAN : It is breathtaking; it is incredible. We are not resting on our laurels. We know that we need to do more. On the weekend we launched a new advertising campaign called ApprentiCentre, which is designed to encourage young people to undertake traineeships or apprenticeships. Advertisements will appear on television, in cinemas, in print and on radio to get into the heads of young people and make them realise that they can get a great job, they can earn a good income and they can stay in Western Australia and have a big future. Members should watch that campaign. In addition, we launched a new website. Before members say, “Another website!”, I point out that this website will enable an employer and an apprentice to register, and then the apprentice can search for suitable jobs. We will SMS these people to inform them of any jobs that have been registered that might suit them. A young person who registers on the site can receive an SMS advising that a job or apprenticeship opportunity is available, and he or she can take advantage of it. Considering we have the highest rate of mobile phone ownership in the country, that is a very innovative and sensible solution.
