Midland Train Station redevelopment—Light spill
257. Hon Steve Martin to the parliamentary secretary representing the Minister
for Transport:
I refer to ongoing
local frustration over impacts of the new Midland Station redevelopment,
particularly for residents and small businesses along Railway Parade.
(1) Is the minister's
office aware of correspondence relating to excessive light spill into an
existing Railway Parade residence as a result of a streetlight installed
five metres away from the second-storey windows?
(2) Does the minister find it acceptable or
reasonable that a public light installation would be left to shine light
straight into the front windows of an existing residence for months?
(3) Does the minister accept that reasonable
mitigation measures should be taken to address the issue?
(4) What action has been taken in the nine months
since the issue was first raised by the resident?

I thank the
honourable member for some notice of the question and provide the following
answer on behalf of the Minister for Transport.
(1)–(4) The lighting addresses public
safety concerns and is directed onto the public footpath and roadway. It was
relocated from a previous position directly outside the building at the request
of the resident. Mitigation measures continue to be explored.
