MINING AND PETROLEUM APPROVAL PROCESSES — REVIEW
Earlier this year, on 8 September 2009, I asked a question of the minister about the Industry Working Group. The minister responded as part of that question as follows — I can assure the member that there is no intention to reduce the rigour of the environmental approvals processes or dilute the role of the Minister for Environment. In this regard, does the minister still support this view and does the minister still support the current approvals and appeal processes? Hon DONNA FARAGHER

I thank the member for some notice of this question. Absolutely. This government is committed to improving the approvals process without reducing the rigour of the environmental impact assessment. I would have thought that the recent decision to split the Environmental Protection Authority, to make it more independent and more transparent, is one example of many where we have shown that we place a very strong emphasis on the environmental impact assessment.
